What Is Aikido?
Aikido is a modern Japanese Martial Art founded by Morihei Ueshiba, referred to by many as O’Sensei (Great Teacher). It is based on his training in the Traditional Japanese Martial Arts as well as his rigorous spiritual practices. The word Aikido means ‘the way through Spirit and Harmony’. It focuses on the development of Ki, Mind and Body co-ordination. Its unique principles within the gentle art can be practiced by men and women of all ages and children from the age of six. Its emphasis is placed on spherical movement to create dynamic and explosive techniques that render an attacker harmless.
Ueshiba envisioned Aikido not only as the basis of his Martial training, but also as an expression of his personal belief and philosophy of universal peace and reconciliation. Ueshiba declared, “To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace.”
