Childrens Class

Welcome to the Fun World of Aikido!!

We would like to invite your child to come and take part in our exciting New Aikido Classes for children aged 8 to 14 years old. Aikido is a modern, non-aggressive, defensive Japanese Martial Art. Haden Hill Aikido Club began teaching Aikido to junior members on 18th September 2009 for the first time at its newly launched Club at Haden Hill Leisure Centre. Within a few weeks its young membership began to flourish and now, it is one of the biggest Martial Arts class within the Leisure Centre. It is also the first successful children’s class within the Organisation. It has proved to be so successful that the Club now has two children's classes on a Friday evening to accommodate demand from our young practitioners.

The Lesson

Each lesson is delivered by Sensei's Ken and Helen Williams, (2nd Dans) in a unique format.  They are fun packed high energy sessions to ensure each child's learning ability and skill is nurtured to keep them interested and motivated  at all times.  We emphasise and believe in adopting an 'inclusive' approach so that all our club members work together to learn and practice the fundamental principles of Aikido.

Practice Day and Class Times

Friday Evening

6:30pm - 7:30pm in the Community Hall

7:30pm - 8:30pm in the Community Hall

We Include:

  • A gentle reminder of good etiquette towards Instructors and fellow practitioners.

  • This extends to how they learn to behave outside of the Dojo (Practice Hall)  too.

  • Specific warm ups and breathing exercises at the start of each class to help settle the mind and concentration before a focused practice takes place.

  • Safe application of pinning techniques and throws.

  • Forward & backward rolls (Ukemi) to help develop the child’s body co-ordination and appreciation of all aspects of the Aikido training session. I.e. To be able to do the technique as well as being able to breakfall safely out of a technique.

  • The Katas we use at Haden Hill Aikido Club not only facilitate understanding of the general principles of Aikido movements but also help the co-ordination of mind and body as well as focus and concentration. The use of Katas when practicing with Children are a great source of fun in learning to co-ordinate body movements and in particular helps develop their concentration.  This may then reflect in other parts of their lives such as at school, especially during exams.

  • Basic Bokken (Wooden Sword) and Jo (Wooden Stick) techniques and Katas.
